Umang Bhattacharyya

A brief biography


Umang Bhattacharyya works with photographs and video to explore narration, representation, and the experience of image and sound making itself. He lives in Goa & New Delhi and works as a filmmaker & design consultant ( as brand creator and strategist for Slurrp Farm)

He was previously creative director at the New Delhi-based design firm Design Workshop and has studied visual communication and film at the Srishti School Art, Design and Technology.


Practice:

MuitipIe Films showcasing ITCs social initiatives. Shot over a period of two years across several states, these include films on watershed development, education, hygiene and sanitation, social forestry, skilling and vocational training, women's entrepreneurship & their work in agriculture. Designed for a physical experience centre in the making and social media campaigns.

Brand Films for New York based product designer Michael Aram 2015-2016

Sustainable Paradigms: Re-imagining Steel Re-rolling in India. Short film on the energy efficiency measures used in the secondary steel sector. Produced by Ministry of Steel and the United Nations Development Programme. Part of the India Pavilion at COP Climate Change Conference, 2015.

Commissioned by IDEO Singapore and IDEO USA to make communication tools (Video) for strategy implementation. 2014, 2015, 2017 & 2019

Directed, shot and edited 'Suryamani' (for a not for profit organization called Going to School), screened at the VATAVARAN Film Festival 2007, Colorado Environmental FiIm Festival, MIFF (Mumbai International Film Festival) 2008 and Green Film Festival in Seoul (GFFIS) 2008. (Also aired on National Geographic)

Cuisine Series for ITC Hotels 2008- 2016

Co-developed, interactive exhibition showcased at Ars Electronica, Linz, in 2004

Artist-in-residence for Alliance Francaise, Paris, 2004, followed by a pan-India exhibition of the work titled 'Thrice Removed'
